Real and Personal STEM for School, Family, and Planet

What Drives Us

Young people want to learn skills and knowledge that is clearly relevant to their lives, helps out their families, and empowers them to take on the real environmental challenges that will define their future.

For our team - as parents, teachers, and conservationists - these are deep and personal values.

Water, gas, and electric utility meters are already measuring students’ natural resource footprint in their homes, and we leverage this existing technology to initiate authentic, data-driven inquiry and experimental design.

This process of inquiry frees them to be STEM Heroes: analysts, scientists, and engineers who use their own real-life data to make a real difference, right now.

As a STEM hero, Your Child will:

  1. Build the nonfiction literacy and STEM skills needed for school and career achievement;
  2. Control utility usage, collect data, and act to reduce utility costs at home, at school, and in the community;
  3. Lead the protection of our local air and water supplies.

How Can You Support Your Child During MeterHero?

Become Familiar With MeterHero.

  • MeterHero is a unique, cutting-edge experience that makes STEM real and relevant to students and their homes.

  • Click the family letter and FAQ for an overview of the MeterHero unit and answers to questions you might have.

Learn with Your Child.

  • During MeterHero your child will locate their utility meters. They will be given handouts and examples, but may need your help finding and reading meters.

  • Expect your child to be taking 3-7 utility meter readings per week for approximately 3-5 weeks.

  • Use the documents to learn more about finding and reading your utility meters.

Communicate With Your Child.

  • Your child will choose to implement a particular efficiency behavior or technology for an experiment.

  • As students design their experiments they are encouraged to identify and communicate with stakeholders - and this includes you!

  • Encourage your child to share findings with you. They may find that their experiment yielded decreased utility consumption, which means more savings for your household!

  • Find assistance programs in your area to help with energy and water bills. Click on the “Programs” button on your student’s MeterHero dashboard:
